What's the national penny shortage and how will it affect shopping?
The United States officially stopped minting pennies for circulation as of November, 12, 2025 due to the high cost of production. While there’s technically plenty of pennies left in circulation, many of them are stashed away or forgotten about in drawers or jars. Without new coins being minted, many banks and retailers rely solely on recycled coins.
In an effort to simplify transactions and save customers money, The Fire Station is rounding every total down to the nearest nickel.
