Meet local artist, Jessica McCullough
Jessica McCullough is a local artist and member of the Hannahville Potawatomi, a tribe in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, approximately 15 miles west of Escanaba.
When Marsha Moffett, General Manager at The Fire Station Hannahville, first became aware of Jessica’s beaded hats, she knew immediately that Jessica and The Fire Station needed to collaborate on a piece together. After several weeks of work, Jessica handcrafted not just one, but eight custom TFS hats.
In an effort to raise awareness during Indigenous Awareness Month, customers at each TFS location will have the opportunity to donate $1 or more and enter for a chance to win one of the hats. All donations will go to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA, an organization that The Fire Station is proud to support.
“My name is Jessica McCullough, I am 55 years old and I am from Hannahville, Michigan. I currently live in Hannahville and The Fire Station is located on my reservation.”
“I started out by making beaded lanyards for my co-workers and local community. Then, through word of mouth, more and more people wanted my beadwork so I started selling around the region at powwows and through extended family and friends.”
“I was forwarded a picture on social media of a beaded hat by one of my friends and decided to make myself one. My three daughters and grandkids also wanted a hat, so I had to make them each one. I wanted to collaborate with The Fire Station after I was encouraged by my family. My family hoped it would be a good way to promote my beadwork and do something for the local community.”
“It is my hope that recipients of the beaded hats feel proud to wear them.”
