Rooted in Science: An Interview with Darcy Mickelsen
What inspired you to pursue a degree in Medicinal Plant Chemistry? What excites you most about the industry’s future?
"I have always been curious about the natural compounds found in plants and how they can have powerful effects on the human body. Pursuing a degree in Medicinal Plant Chemistry has allowed me to combine my passion for plants with my interest in science and medicine. What excites me most about the industry’s future is the growing scientific understanding of plant-derived compounds and their potential to provide new treatments for a wide variety of health conditions."
What areas of Medicinal Plant Chemistry are you most passionate about and why?
"I am most passionate about phytochemistry and the study of plant-derived compounds. I enjoy learning about the different secondary metabolites produced by plants and how environmental stressors can influence their production. It fascinates me that these compounds can be isolated, analyzed, and potentially developed into treatments that improve human health."
What are your long-term career goals within the cannabis industry?
"My long-term career goal within the cannabis industry is to work in research and development, studying cannabis and other medicinal plant-derived compounds and their applications for the skin and hair care industry. I hope to combine medicinal plant chemistry with cosmetic science to create safe, effective, and innovative products that promote healthy skin and hair."
How will this scholarship help you move closer to your career goals?
"This scholarship helps to reduce the financial burden of my education, allowing me to focus more on my coursework, research opportunities, and educational development. Paying for school can be challenging, and scholarships like this can make all the difference."
Advice for future students
"My advice to those wanting to pursue a career in the cannabis field would be to just go for it. If it is something that you are passionate about, don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back. Let your curiosity for science guide you, continue asking questions, and never stop learning. The industry is growing rapidly, and there are countless opportunities for those willing to work hard and embrace new discoveries."
Darcy’s drive to merge rigorous analytical chemistry with commercial cosmetic R&D is a perfect example of how the cannabis industry is evolving. By funding scholarships at local institutions like NMU, home to the country’s first four-year degree program in Medicinal Plant Chemistry, The Fire Station hopes to foster this exact kind of groundbreaking research right here in the U.P.
