I’m mostly a novice when it comes to cannabis consumption. The majority of my experience comes from the years before marijuana legalization when I would only consume if I was with a group of friends who happened to have weed. I’d never bought pot before it became legal in Michigan, so the world of marijuana is still pretty new to me.
In the past year, I’ve come to really enjoy vaping from time to time. It’s convenient, the activation time is immediate, and I love that it’s discreet so I can bring it with me anywhere I might want to use it.
I started with buying disposable vape pens. These were great products that definitely provided me with the results I was looking for, but I hated having to throw them away when they were gone.
My biggest concerns with “upgrading” to a permanent vape set up were the cost and the uncertainty of what I actually needed to buy. I was SURE that I would need to spend north of $100 to get all of the parts I’d need and a cartridge, and I didn’t know if I wanted to make that much of an investment. I was SO surprised to learn that I was completely wrong!
When I walked into The Fire Station, I was warmly greeted by a budtender named Jacob who was eager to help me find what I needed. I shared with him that I had been buying disposable vape pens for a while and I was wondering if I should get something more permanent. He enthusiastically replied, “Yes! And I can get you set up for less than $50!”
I could not believe my ears. A permanent set up for only $20 more than a disposable pen?! Yes, please.

Jacob asked me if I preferred indica, sativa, or hybrid, and if I had a preference of the strain I’d like my cart to be. He followed up with the options I had for different color batteries, and in less than five minutes, I was out the door with a complete set up.
Here’s what I walked out with:
- 510 thread USB charger ($1.99) – this is pretty self explanatory. It threads into the battery and can be plugged into any USB adapter to recharge.
- Platinum Vape GG4 Hybrid 510 Cart ($35) – This cart threads into the battery and contains 1g of concentrate that is 79.64% THC and 1.65% CBD. The overall volume is 2x what the disposable pens I had been buying were, so it should last me longer — score!
- An EVOD battery ($9.99) – I went with pink, because why not? But there were several other colors to choose from for those who don’t want something that’s as flashy. As a newbie to vape carts, I was a little confused on how to use the battery when I first took it out of the box. It didn’t come with any directions, so I did a quick Google search to learn the basics, such as how to turn it on, off, and how to know when it’s fully charged. (See what I learned on YouTube) This battery also has the 510 thread, so in the future, I can switch to a different brand or strain of cart if I’d like to.

My biggest takeaway:
I couldn’t believe I walked out of The Fire Station with a vaporizer set up for less than $50. From this experience, I learned not to be afraid to ask for help when it comes to trying and buying new types of marijuana products when I’m unsure. The budtenders at all TFS locations are so knowledgeable and helpful, and I’m thrilled with my purchase.
